About The Environment Centre

Our History

In 1997, Frances Alexander (now one of The Centre trustees) convened a meeting of 16 local environmental groups to consider an environmental project, which would help to meet local needs. A steering group was formed and proposals to convert the redundant cafe building at the Holywell Mead Outdoor Swimming Pool site into a visitor centre were put forward.

Renovation of the cafe building was funded by Biffaward using Landfill Tax credits, together with support from Wycombe District Council the Environment Agency and BBOWT. The major structural elements of the original building were retained, so avoiding the need for new build and environmentally friendly construction materials were used throughout.
